Homemade Biscuits (Dairy Free!)
Homemade biscuits. There’s just something about the flaky goodness of a warm biscuit melting into your mouth. Canned biscuits are fine in a pinch, but there’s really nothing like a biscuit that you’ve mixed and kneaded yourself. Since most biscuit recipes contain dairy, it’s taken me a bit of trial and error to find a good dairy free version.
And these dairy free biscuits aren’t just good. They are flat out wonderful! These biscuits are made with crisco and almond milk to make them completely dairy free. The crisco really adds the light flakiness that you want in a biscuit. They are also a breeze to make! I love to double the recipe and freeze the extras or use throughout the week as breakfasts, snacks, or dinner sides.
*Biscuit making tip*:
To cut out these biscuits, I use an actual biscuit cutter passed down to me from my Meemaw. (And I cherish it!) But you can also use a mason jar lid ring or just a glass cup to cut out your biscuits. Make sure to press straight down and back up again. Do not twist when cutting out your biscuits as that can seal the edges and keep them from rising as much.
Ingredients:
- 2 cups all purpose flour
- 1 tbsp sugar
- 1 tbsp baking powder
- 1 tsp salt
- 1/3 cup crisco
- 3/4 cup unsweetened original almond milk
Directions:
Preheat oven to 425.
In a large bowl, combine flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt. Next cut in your crisco with a pastry cutter, or two forks, until the crisco resembles pea sized crumbs. Pour your milk into the bowl and mix until it all comes together. Lightly flour your counter and dump your dough out to knead lightly just until the dough comes together well. With your fingers, press dough until it is an inch thick. Cut out your biscuits then reform your dough and continue cutting out biscuits until all are formed.
Bake in your preheated oven for 12-15 minutes or until tops of biscuits are lightly golden. Remove and serve warm with butter, jelly, or honey!
