Book Review: How to Get the Most from God’s Word
As I have mentioned in my previous book reviews, my goal for this year has been to read more. And not just more fun fictional books, not just study books, but also (and most importantly) my Bible. I have never successfully read through the Bible from start to finish, though I have often tried. Once again, this year I decided to give it a try and stay more committed. I always do really well until I get to Leviticus. It’s just a hard book to get through and I become slack. To gain some encouragement and motivation, I began reading John MacArthur’s book “How to Get the Most from God’s Word”.
John MacArthur does it again by delivering an understandable and convicting book. He doesn’t just give random tips to read better, but instead drills the importance of knowing your Bible. He answers questions such as “How did God Inspire the Bible?”, “What did Jesus Think of the Bible?”, “How is the Bible Organized?”, and many more.
In the end, MacArthur does give a simple way of reading through the Bible and actually ingesting what you’re reading. There’s no rush to fly through your Bible in a year. Why bother reading if you’re not going to soak in the word and let it saturate your thoughts? This is something I need to keep in mind and push myself to practice.
Conclusion:
Coming away from this book, I have a better outlook on studying my Bible. I’m newly motivated to read it in it’s entirety and absorb every word. I’ll end this with a wholehearted recommendation for MacArthur’s book and one of my favorite quotes from it:
“There are three approaches to God’s Word which can be likened to three visitors to a beautiful flower garden. We can be butterflies who flutter about, obtaining little of real value, or we can botanist who careful study the details and the fine points of the flower but who fail to find and real nourishment. Or we can be bees, who sink deep into God’s word, going in empty and coming out full of His truth, wisdom, and power.”
